Richard Ayuso, OD has been a practicing optometrist since 1983. Originally from Staten Island, New York, he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Biology from Fairfield University in Connecticut. He received his optometry degree from the State University of New York College of Optometry in Manhattan.
After graduation, he was commissioned as an officer in the U.S. Army. During his four years of service as a Captain, his duty assignments included the 97th General Hospital in Frankfurt, West Germany and Raider Army Medical Clinic in Fort Myer, Virginia. Upon separation from the Army, Dr. Ayuso worked in various clinics around Northern Virginia before relocating to Jacksonville, North Carolina where he practiced for 28 years before joining Wilmington Eye. Dr. Ayuso brings many years of experience with him to provide comprehensive eye exams, contact lens fittings and medical management of glaucoma and anterior segment disease. He also provides pre and postoperative care for refractive and cataract surgery. Dr. Ayuso is a long standing member of the North Carolina Optometric Society and the American Optometric Association.

Dr. Ayuso enjoys spending time with his wife, Jill, traveling to discover new places and visiting their children and grandson. At family gatherings you can find him in charge of the grill.
