Our office in Wilmington, North Carolina is a premier provider of custom LASIK. As its name implies, this procedure improves upon traditional LASIK by further customizing it for each patient. The technology used for custom LASIK was originally developed to help adjust telescope optics. It has now found a new home and a loyal following in the field of refractive surgery.
Traditional LASIK is customized to the refractive error of each patient’s eyes; it does not, however, correct for higher order aberrations. Higher order aberrations are unique imperfections in the eye that differ from lower order aberrations such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. Because higher order aberrations affect visual clarity, wavefront technology with VISX® Advanced CustomVue® is used to help our physicians diagnose, map, and then correct these unique imperfections. Higher order aberrations are mapped using a device that shines a light in the eye, and then measures the unique way the light is reflected back.
Our patients from Wilmington, Myrtle Beach, New Bern, and other areas of eastern North and South Carolina seeking custom LASIK can also benefit from IntraLase® technology for a completely blade-free procedure.
During a consultation, patients can quickly learn whether this procedure is right for them. By speaking with an ophthalmologist at our office, you can easily determine if custom LASIK is right for you. Contact our office to schedule a consultation today.
The Pentacam® from Oculus, Inc. is a sophisticated diagnostic tool used in measuring the refractive characteristics of the eye. In using the Pentacam®, Eye Associates of Wilmington is taking advantage of the most advanced technology to determine whether patients are candidates for LASIK surgery. The Pentacam® helps our physicians create a three-dimensional map of the eye, allowing them to quickly and accurately analyze possible abnormalities in corneal shape and thickness. This allows personalized treatment decisions to be made based on incredibly accurate information, providing a greater assurance of safety and effectiveness for each of our patients.
At Eye Associates of Wilmington, IntraLase® technology provides patients with a blade-free alternative to traditional LASIK surgery. Each type of LASIK procedure requires a flap to be made in the outer layer of the cornea before the underlying tissue is reshaped. The IntraLase® laser serves this purpose by precisely removing corneal tissue at the edges of what will become the LASIK flap. Your physician can adjust the depth the laser will penetrate the corneal tissue, allowing for the creation of a flap that is truly customized to your needs. The physicians at our Wilmington, North Carolina office use IntraLase® technology to perform LASIK and Custom LASIK for those with thin corneas or other conditions that might otherwise make them ineligible for treatment.
After our experienced ophthalmologists create a custom flap with the Intralase® laser, custom LASIK may be used to further tailor your LASIK treatment to your individual needs. This is done with a VISX® Advanced CustomVue® laser. Given the benefits of these highly precise lasers and the absence of blades during surgery, it is easy to see why patients who once feared traditional LASIK and other refractive surgeries are now making the decision to achieve the visual clarity and lifestyle improvements available through vision enhancement.
To precisely measure the surface curvature of the cornea, the eye care professionals at Eye Associates of Wilmington use the Magellan corneal topographer from NIDEK. Because the surface of the eye is normally responsible for 70 percent of the eye’s refractive power, precise, three-dimensional mapping of the corneas topography is of utmost importance when preparing for LASIK and other refractive surgeries. Magellan is yet another example of Eye Associates of Wilmington’s dedication to using the latest technologies to provide patients with amazing refractive surgery results. Magellan technology can also be used to assess the fit of patients’ contact lenses.
