Eye Associates of Wilmington — ReStor® Lenses for Cataract Surgery

Another option for patients considering cataract surgery, ReStor® IOLs help clear clouding while at the same time improving focusing ability.ReStor® IOLs represent a true technological innovation in the field of cataract treatment. By aiding in the eye’s ability to accommodate (i.e., focus at a variety of distances), ReStor® IOLs may be the ideal choice to help you improve your vision and your quality of life. Revolutionary ReStor® IOLs provide cataract patients with increased freedom from glasses and contact lenses. By combining the qualities of apodized diffractive and refractive technologies, ReStor® IOLs provide quality vision at distances from near to far, helping patients not only treat cataracts, but see more clearly than they have in years.

Apodized Diffractive Technology

Apodized diffractive technology involves the gradual tapering of the diffractive steps from the center to the outside of the lens. This creates a smooth transition of light between near, intermediate, and distant focal points. Similar technologies have long been used to improve image quality in microscopes and telescopes. As light passes through the ReStor® IOL, the diffractive steps of the lens bend and spread the light to multiple focal points for improved focusing ability.

Refractive Technology

Refraction refers to the redirection of light through the lens to focus light (and therefore images) on the retina. Nearsightedness, far sightedness, and astigmatism are all refractive errors. With monofocal IOLs for the treatment of cataracts, patients once required glasses or contact lenses to focus properly. Now, the refractive steps of multifocal ReStor® IOLs bend light to the appropriate focal points of the retina. With ReStor® multifocal IOLs, an increasing number of patients are able to reduce their dependence of glasses and contact lenses.
