Darrell E. Hester, M.D. is one of southeastern North Carolinas most skilled ophthalmic surgeons who combines over 20 years experience in a broad range of eye surgeries with cutting edge technologies. He has been with Eye Associates of Wilmington since 1996.

A graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine, Dr. Hester completed his training at the UNC Department of Ophthalmology and was the first UNC resident to perform no-stitch cataract surgery. He has performed laser vision correction since 1997, shortly after the first FDA approval for use of the eximer laser in the United States. Subsequently he was one of the first in the region to perform blade free LASIK with the IntraLase femtosecond laser. Dr. Hester was instrumental in introducing VISX® Advanced CustomVue® laser vision correction to the LASIK center at Eye Associates of Wilmington and is a certified IntraLase® and VISX® Advanced CustomVue® surgeon.

Dr. Hester specializes in all aspects of modern cataract surgery including the implantation of premium intraocular lenses such as the AcrySof® IQ toric IOL for astigmatism and multifocal lenses such as the Alcon ReSTOR® lens. Dr. Hester also routinely performs many oculoplastic procedures such as blepharoplasty and ptosis repairs (“eyelid lift”) and the correction of eyelid malpositions.

Dr. Hester previously served in the Air Force Medical Corps at Keesler Medical Center in Biloxi, Mississippi, the Air Force's second largest hospital. As a major, Dr. Hester served there as Chief of Ophthalmology. Dr. Hester is a diplomate of the American Board of Ophthalmology and a fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology.  Memberships include the New Hanover-Pender County Medical Society (former 1st and 2nd Vice-President), the North Carolina Medical Society, the American Medical Association, the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons, and the International Society of Refractive Surgery.

A multi-talented and well rounded individual, Dr. Hester is an avid musician and enjoys piano, guitar, bass, trumpet, and banjo. His hobbies include exercise, scuba diving, and kiteboarding. Dr. Hester has three children, Jonathan, Brandon, and Autumn.
