Blade-Free LASIK Treatment

At our office, an IntraLase® femtosecond laser is used to provide blade-free LASIK treatment to patients who wish to achieve increased independence from glasses and contact lenses. IntraLase® is the first laser technology designed to perform blade-free LASIK treatment and has become the benchmark for the industry.  Learn more about iLASIK technology here!

All LASIK procedures involve the creation of a thin flap in the cornea. Traditional LASIK uses a device called a microkeratome to create the flap with the use of an oscillating metal blade whereas blade-free LASIK uses IntraLase® laser technology. After the flap is created, the curvature of the cornea is subtly enhanced through the use of another technology: an excimer laser. Its new shape allows light to be focused more directly onto the retina for greatly improved vision. Before an excimer laser is used, the physicians at Wilmington Eye are able to customize the creation of the flap by precisely adjusting the IntraLase® laser. These adjustments allow the LASIK flap to be made at the optimal depth for your specific vision requirements.

Our surgeons use this revolutionary LASIK treatment because of the superior precision of the IntraLase® Method. With the use of rapid pulses of light instead of the blade of a microkeratome, this laser technology represents the most precise means available to create the flap during the LASIK procedure.

VISX® Advanced CustomVue® for Your Custom LASIK Procedure

Because it measures and corrects for patients’ “higher order aberrations” (imperfections unique to each person’s eyes), LASIK with VISX® Advanced CustomVue® technology at Wilmington Eye provides superior vision correction. Our staff serving patients from Wilmington, Myrtle Beach, Jacksonville, New Bern, and other areas of eastern North and South Carolina is highly experienced in taking full advantage of this powerful technology.

During LASIK treatment at The LASIK Center of Wilmington Eye, a state-of-the-art VISX Star S4 excimer laser is used to precisely remove tissue and reshape the cornea, improving its ability to focus light. In this way, clearer vision can be achieved, since light is directed more efficiently onto the retina. VISX® Advanced CustomVue® provides patients of Wilmington Eye with excellent refractive correction. Using wavefront technology with the help of the WaveScan WaveFront™ System by VISX, our skilled LASIK surgeons use a precise map of the imperfections of the cornea to make adjustments that would go unnoticed during a traditional refractive procedure.
