What Is a Cataract?

A cataract is a painless clouding of the lens of the eye that progresses gradually. It is not fully known why cataracts develop. However, genetics and a number of eye diseases and injuries are thought to be at least partly responsible for a large number of cases. Cataracts are very common and cataract surgery is one of the most frequently performed surgeries in the United States.

Our office in Wilmington, North Carolina provides exceptional cataract surgery. With ReZoom® and ReSTOR® intraocular lenses, our experienced physicians offer the latest treatment options for those suffering from cataracts. If you would like to learn more about what cataract surgery can do for you, contact our office today for a consultation.

Cataract Symptoms

Cataract symptoms include blurred vision, as well as glare or halos around lights. The symptoms of cataracts can negatively affect a person’s life in many ways. For example, they can make driving difficult, especially at night, which can result in a loss of independence and greater inconvenience for those affected. Additionally, sufferers may find it increasingly difficult to read due to the blurred vision caused by cataracts. Cataract surgery at Eye Associates of Wilmington helps patients resolve these issues.

Types of Cataracts

There are three kinds of cataracts, each affecting a different area of the eye. All of them can be treated at Eye Associates of Wilmington in North Carolina with ReZoom® and ReSTOR® IOLs. If you would like to discuss the latest cataract treatments at Eye Associates of Wilmington, contact our office today for a consultation. In the meantime, here is an overview of the cataract problems many people face.

Nuclear Cataract

This is the most common type of cataract. It forms in the center of the lens (the nucleus) and, for many, is a natural part of the aging process.

Cortical Cataract

This type of cataract forms in the lens cortex (the portion surrounding the center of the lens) and can gradually extend to the outer edges of the eye. Many diabetics experience this type of cataract.

Subcapsular Cataract

This type of cataract begins at the back of the lens and may develop in people with diabetes, retinis pigmentosa, or high farsightedness, or as a result of steroid use.

How Is Cataract Surgery Performed?

At our office in Wilmington, serving patients from Jacksonville, Myrtle Beach, New Bern, and elsewhere in eastern North and South Carolina, cataract surgery is performed by doctors with years of training and experience. During surgery, a small incision is made in the eye. Through this opening, the affected lens is removed and then replaced with an intraocular lens, or IOL. A relatively straightforward procedure, cataract surgery is generally performed on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia.

What Can I Expect after Cataract Surgery?

After cataract surgery, patients can expect to experience improved vision anywhere from one day to a week after cataract surgery. At Eye Associates of Wilmington, our staff provides thorough aftercare to help patients experience the best possible recovery. Medication may be prescribed to prevent infection and control eye pressure. Any discomfort associated with cataract surgery should subside after only a couple days.
